Shiatsu in the Winter time – Exeter & Dawlish, Devon

I’ve noticed from my clients that the cold weather is showing up all their aches & pains & areas of weakness.

Whilst working on people I have noticed less energy in general in people.

It’s understandable in this cold weather. We should be hibernating really, conserving our energy. There is such a demand on us & it becomes difficult to find space to rest & recuperate.

This cold winter weather relates to the Water elements. This is within 5 Element diagnosis, part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The meridians in this element are very important. They hold our core energy. If they are over-used they are unable to feed the other energies in out body.

What can we do to support this energy in this cold weather?

  • Rest as much as possible
  • Meditate or sit still & quiet
  • Get to bed as early as you can
  • Wrap up warm – including neck & around the abdomen area
  • Eat watery broths, fish & sea vegetables

Also obviously Shiatsu can really help a lot. It can create more resource in the body, in can relieve pain & symptoms & support mental strain.

I have a few spaces left before Christmas, both in Exeter & Dawlish.

What does a Shiatsu involve? Exeter & Dawlish, Devon

Shiatsu is a relaxing but energising treatment. It is a hands on therapy given through clothes & on a futon mat on the floor. Although it can be given on a chair or couch if it maybe difficult to get down or back up from the floor.

Shiatsu is an all over body treatment, it can be focused specially on one area of the body. Similarly the whole body can be treated from one area. Each treatment is specially tailored to that person on that day. Every Shiatsu is different.Shiatsu massage uses the same points & meridians, lines of energy, that acupuncture uses. Shiatsu looks to balance the energy in body. This balance can ease pain, symptoms & provide support.
Clients have mentioned that they feel more energy after a treatment, that they feel more focussed & have more drive, that they have had relief from symptoms, that they have slept better, needed the loo less, had better joint flexibility.Shiatsu is a safe & secure environment & is totally confidential. It can help support emotional distress, stress, anxiety & depression.  I have clients who have come with work related stress & also people who are going through big changes in their personal lives.I work in Exwick, Exeter & Dawlish & I’m also happy to discuss Shiatsu so do get in touch with any questions, through the ‘contact me’page.

Shiatsu Massage & the Changing Seasons – Exeter & Dawlish, Devon

Wow so we find ourselves in September, already, & the weather seems to have a harsh lesson for us this year – enough of the Summer, welcome to cold Autumn. No Indian Summer, as yet, no gentle change in temperature, no final days of golden sunshine – just plenty of rain, cold temperatures & harsh winds – great!!!!

This time of year relates to the Earth energy, within 5 Element Diagnosis. This is part of Traditonal Chinese Medicine & is used as a form of diagnosis within Shiatsu. The Earth energy is about gathering fruit & later crops, to begin to settle down into the Autumn & to store for the Winter.

This year the energy seems different. It’s like we have missed a season & similarly have missed an Element within the 5 Elements. It feels like we have moved straight to the Metal element energy & bypassed the Earth energy. The metal energy is about letting go, about boundaries, about organisation & having things in their place.

A lot of the clients I have seen recently have been showing an imbalance with their metal energy & I have been having quite a few conversations with people who are having to let go of big things in their lives. It seems a strong energy this year to let go of things & to adapt to quite big changes. It feels like the Metal energy is insisting that we shed & move on & prepare, already, for the upcoming Winter months.

So how do we support our metal energy at this time – how do we feel alright about these changes?

  • Grasp the nettle & declutter – not all of it! Just have a go at clearing out a corner in your house or sort the piles of letters you have been ignoring!
  • Exercise to get going – no I’m not suggesting you start jogging or weight lifting! Wake the body in the morning – stretch the arms, open the chest, breath deeply, rub your limbs, your face & scratch your scalp. Don’t jump up & start the day, take a couple of minutes to wake the body up.
  • Get out in the fresh air – breathing the, at present rather fresh, air can help balance the metal energy, as can a bit of cardio exercise. A brisk walk, not for long, to open the lungs & energise the body & mind.
  • Then maybe think about what you want or need to let go of & what you really want to hold onto.
  • write a list, get some clarity & focus. This can work either way, you may feel you can’t let go or you may feel you can’t hold on, you may also feel a lack of clarity of thought, you don’t really know how you feel. Try to get your ideas down on a piece of paper as a first step.
  • Of course get some Shiatsu massage! Shiatsu is a safe & secure form of therapy, allowing you to feel how you feel without judgement or expectation. It can help rebalance the Metal energy in your body, removing fuzziness of thought, or fear of letting go or anxiety to hold on.  It can help the flow of energy in the body which in turn helps the flow of thoughts & emotions. It provides time out from daily responsibilities & expectations, a quick breather, which can leave the client feeling relaxed but energised & ready to face the world once more!

If you have any questions about Metal energy deficiency or whether Shiatsu maybe able to support you then do get in touch – either through the ‘contact me’ page or on 07791 070837. I work in Exeter & Dawlish. I offer private client appointments but can also work in workplaces, with families & I also offer workshops.

Shiatsu & Sorting – a good Saturday, Exeter, Devon

I did my usual Saturday morning of Shiatsu today, down here in Exeter, Devon. I love giving relaxing Shiatsu massage to people at the end of a busy week. Clients are generally cheery & already quite relaxed when they arrive, which starts the treatments off well.  I finish my morning’s work feeling energized & positive.

I got home to find my eldest son wasn’t feeling great, it might have had something to do with the busy school trip yesterday. My husband headed out to exercise our youngest child, much like a puppy, young boys need a certain level of exercise & fresh air to feel relaxed in their bodies. Also, to be honest, our house gets wrecked pretty quickly if they have too much energy so we need them to get out & about. I was then stuck in the house energized & ready to do something positive, whilst our eldest took some well needed time out.

Having young kids means various areas of our house have become dumping grounds, which we just haven’t had the time to clear or organise. The kids are a little older now however I am now working more so still not much time to get stuck in to anything but the daily household tasks.  Before I had a chance to think about how long a job it would be I began clearing the under the stairs cupboard.

Although it did take quite a bit longer than I had anticipated, & there were points where I wish I hadn’t started, it was such an incredible sensation of achievement, relief & clarity when I had finally finished. It reminded me that within the 5 Element system, one form of diagnosis used within Shiatsu, organising & sorting, cleaning & clearing can be really helpful & beneficial.

If you are struggling to have clear thoughts, they are muddied or keep being swayed by others then you may have a deficiency within the Metal element, of the 5 Element system. The metal element is about boundaries, being able to hold them or being too quick to let them go. It is about organisation or disorganization & it is it about clarity & pinpointed focus or unclear & inconsistent thought. So a little clearing & organising may help, maybe not a massive undertaking like sorting a pit of a cupboard, but just sorting a drawer or a kitchen cupboard, filing a little paperwork or even just writing a to do list.

Another good thing to do for a metal deficiency can be cardio exercise, getting air into the lungs, so a brisk walk or even a run up & down the stairs. It depends what exercise you are used to taking,  it’s good to start off with a small amount just to expand the lungs a little. You could even do the hovering, a bit of cardio with a little organising & clearing! The aim isn’t too push yourself, it’s not to get fit or loose weight, it’s about waking up & feeding the Metal energy in the body.

Following my Shiatsu & Sorting today I did find I had clarity of thought, good focus & drive. I have managed to get a fair few more jobs done, written a list planning next week & generally got myself a little ahead of the game. Good old Metal energy.

If you would like to know more about 5 Element Diagnosis or Shiatsu, if you feel you may have a Metal deficiency or you’re wondering if Shiatsu may be able to help you then do drop me a message.  You can do this through the ‘contact me’ page. I’m always happy to talk Shiatsu.

Shiatsu in Dawlish

So excitingly I am going to be offering Shiatsu massage in Dawlish, as well as in Exeter.

I was approached by the owners of The Changes Now Centre, in Dawlish, as to whether I may be interested in offering Shiatsu alongside the other therapies they offer. I didn’t have to think for long – I love the train trip from Exeter to Dawlish, The Changes Now Centre is near to the station & I am based closed to the station in Exeter. So not only is it a beautiful commute it is a relatively short one too! I have been considering looking for a second area to work in & this opportunity seemed to be a good one to go for.

So here we are – I’m going to be offering nurturing & supportive Shiatsu in Dawlish & soon. To begin with I will be offering taster sessions, so people can come & try out Shiatsu. These tasters will be on 14th & 28th June between 10am & 1pm. Then all being well I will be at the centre every other Wednesday.

To book a taster, or a full treatment, you can contact The Changes Now Centre. If you are looking for more information about myself or Shiatsu have a look on the pages on this site & feel free to get in touch. Details are on the contact me page. I am always happy to talk Shiatsu.

Safe & Supportive Shiatsu, Exeter, Devon

A Shiatsu massage treatment creates a safe & confidential space. It is non-judgemental, supportive & gentle. This makes it a great space to treat a variety of emotional & mental issues or concerns.

I have given Shiatsu to people with various issues in their lives at the time of treatment. These range from extreme stress & anxiety, break-downs of a significant relationship, issues within an existing relationship, phobias & extreme fears & depression.

A short consultation takes place at the beginning of a Shiatsu treatment, to discuss health,  any injuries, accidents or medication being taken. This is a chance to voice any concerns or issues. This is completely confidential.

The issues or concerns don’t always have to be talked about, this is the beauty of Shiatsu, the hands-on massage can allow a client to feel their issues or concerns in their body. There isn’t a need to think the issue through or try to think up solutions. A release or sense of relief can happen when the client is given massage with a sensitive, safe & secure touch. Feelings or emotions can rise without warning as a part of the body is touched, that has been holding the tension.

This safe & secure touch is also a great way to re-gain or experience trust in touch. Maybe this trust has been lost due to a particular previous experience or maybe life-experience has never allowed touch to happen in this way.

I have had clients come for Shiatsu who are also using ‘talking therapies’ such as counselling. The two therapies together can help a client process & move through their feelings, finding solutions & making changes.

Shiatsu is a special form of massage that offers a strong connection through touch. This leads to a secure & safe environment. It is also nurturing & supportive, it is kind & gentle. It is very much present & hopefully leaves the client feeling cared for & heard.

If you are interested in knowing more then do get in touch through the contact me page. I am always happy to discuss Shiatsu.

I work in Exwick on the outskirts of Exeter, in Devon. I have a quiet practice room & it’s easy to get here by car, bus or train. I offer Shiatsu on Wednesdays & Saturdays. It maybe possible at other times in the week, it depends if I can get child care.
